Junior A Footballers Safely Through   12/05/2014

Uibh Laoire 2-15
Éire Óg 1-03

On Saturday last, 10/5/14, Uibh Laoire's Junior A Footballers put their name safely in the draw for the next round of Championship after a relatively comfortable win over Éire Óg, at a wind-swept Carrigadrohid.

The scoreline perhaps flatters Uibh Laoire who were made to work hard for their victory for long periods but were able to pull away in the last quarter to put a gloss on the scoreline after being far more economical in front of goal than Éire Óg. They will know they've a lot of room for improvement which is a good position to be in, come the knockout rounds of Championship & will be able to welcome back the likes of Donal Cotter and Cathal Vaughan, both of whom missed out through injury.

Uibh Laoire got off to the perfect start with points from captain, Patrick O'Riordan and Brian Cronin, followed up by a fisted goal by Barry O'Leary in the sixth minute after some great work by debutant Liam Kearney. It looked like Uibh Laoire would sail on from the great start but credit to Éire Óg who battled back with three points of their own but a pair of points from Barry O'Leary and another from Brian Cronin left Uibh Laoire in a good position at the break after playing against a strong breeze.

With the aid of the wind in the second half, Uibh Laoire again started the half strongly with three points from Shane Galvin, Liam Kearney and Barry O'Leary again. To their credit, Éire Óg battled back gamely again with a well worked goal of their own but this was to be as good as it got for them, as Uibh Laoire responded in style with points from Liam Kearney and David Hourihan. As the Éire Óg challenge wilted, Seán Lehane, Edward Buckley, Barry O'Leary and Shane Galvin all got in on the scoring act with points. Barry O'Leary then completed a fine night's scoring, when he gathered Kearney's wayward shot with a magical one-handed catch before burying the ball in the Éire Óg net.

All things considered, this was a great team effort. Regular custodian Jamie Cronin was as solid as ever between the sticks and was helped massively by the outstanding defending of his six defenders, who conceded just four scores over the hour which is a credit to them. The midfield duo of Seán Lehane and Cal McCarthy worked tirelessly while all six forwards scored from play, while registering very few wides over the hour.

Uibh Laoire will now go into the draw for the next round, which will either be a third round game or quarter final. Details of that draw will be released on the club website when it's made.
